Hello, Scottish members. It's nearly a year since the last post in this section which pretty much closed down the Scottish area branch. I enquired recently of the club what was happening with the Scottish branch and the answer was - nothing. nowt. nada. Apparently there had been very little curiosity from Scottish members. So....after talks with Iain in charge of Area business, I've agreed to take on the Scottish Area rep's post for a period of consultation. Hopefully members will put forward ideas as to what they would like to see happen with the Scottish area.... Obviously we're not going to be having a monthly meeting, as it's geographically impractical for Dod in Dumfries to be meeting Tam fae Thurso in a wee boozer near Pitlochry every couple of weeks. Perhaps folk are happy enough to have no functioning area here - if so that's ok too, im sure.

So really I'm just trying to open up an online discussion about what YOU want from your area - if anything.

I'm a member of a couple of other owners clubs - Norton, Triumph and Ariel and, apart from Ariel, they're pretty pathetic compared to the Bantam Club which offers a vast amount of info. Perhaps you're happy with a purely online presence; perhaps you'd like to be able to contact another member close to you to see "in the flesh" how his working D1 magneto/points are set up.......

So please share any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations etc etc etc with the rest of us here and we can ascertain if there is any desire to have a working Area Branch again?

I suggest we hold the debate here on this Topic thread but feel free to PM me with any issues.

Cheers

Stewart

Well done on taking up the post and good luck! I spent two years as area rep for Kent, and I know how tricky it is to organise things that suit people. We did ride outs, monthly meetings and stands at shows.

Ride outs were popular with some members who had a working Bantam and were near the area of the ride out. Monthly meetings were sometimes well attended with a maximum of 15 at one meeting, but some were only attended by me and my wife. As far as attending shows goes, we still do them. Our current area rep decides which shows he wants to go to and advertises them. We have several members who come to one or more, and it’s a great opportunity to have a chat and compare notes.

Good luck, I hope you work out a program that works in Scotland!

Current bikes......1958 D5, a 77 Suzuki GT250 and a 77 Honda CB125S. I have a B175 in the workshop and a 76 Honda C90 waiting its turn. A 1980 Honda CB400N waiting for MOT.  Everyday ride is a 2011 Harley Davidson Sportster.

Hi Gogs! Congratulations A: On your new Bantam B: on being in th Kingdom of Fife and C: on being the first response to the "revitalised" Scottish Branch. I actually don't know how many members are active in Scotland due to "privacy" DPRG or GPRD or whatever it's called.... I only have details of the "opted-in" members who share their details. At present there are about 40 of those, spread from Lewis to Galloway. There's a couple in Fife, I think. Which part are you in? I'm originally from Newport myself, but living in Glasgow now. So is this your first bantam? As you'll have discovered, most spares have to come from down south. But most stuff is still available. You'll have great fun with it anyway.

Cheers

Hi Stoo and Gregor, I'm in Gateside near Auchtermuchty. Apologies for the late reply. Bottom end is now built with an Alpha Bearings repaired crankshaft. Waiting on barrel and new piston coming back and that should finish the engine off. Not sure why I bought the bantam, it just looked cute! Probably looking at spring 2020 to be on the road. Bike will be an oily rag resto but hopefully mechanically sound. Are you looking to have Scottish meets or is that logistically difficult?

Cheers , Gordon.

Gateside!! My all-time dream was always to have th ewee mini garage in Gateside. It's pretty much shut now. the guy's got a nice old Riley Elf that he's done up. So far,Gordon, as you see, you two are the only ones who have bothered to reply. The silence is deafening! And somewhat disappointing, so I think it's a bit early to be planning meets yet. I'm goin to hav eto email all the members whose details I have directly and see if that generates any more interaction, otherwise the club Area goes back into mothballs through lack of interest. There are a few of you in Fife 3 in Kirkcaldy/Dunfermline that I know of and one in Crail. Also Madasapike in Cupar with a D1. There also seems to be another in Kelty, unless thats you in a different guise, Gregor. I'll check if I'm allowed to give you all each others details, so you can see about meeting up. There are Internet security data protection issues that have to be conformed too that, frankly, are beyond my ken.

Stewart, why don't you do what we have resorted to in Kent? Basil, the area rep, picks the shows he wants to attend each year. He then posts up where we are going and leaves it up to everyone in Kent to either come to the show or not, with or without a bike. We would do the shows even if Basil wasn't the area rep, so we aren't going out of our way to attend. Once you generate a little interest among the Scottish members, you may get more people responding on here. Remember as well, that not everyone has the internet, and those that do wont all come on the forum. When I was area rep a few years ago, I sent out letters at Christmas to anyone who didn't have an email address to let them know of events etc. I didn't get any replies though so sometimes you just have to know when to give up! Give it time, Im sure you will get there in the end. Keep up the good work.

Hey Stoo, think Ian at  Minimart is mostly online now, not much cars for sale but definitely not shut. Gregor, happy to help with the timing and other issues, I'll even bring biscuits. Maybe Fife can lead the way for the revitalized Scottish group? If anybody wants to contact me please use the private messaging system. I'm new to bantams but not to bikes so can maybe help. Good luck to you Stoo and keep at it. What's this opt in thing? Is this something I need to do?

Great stuff, Gordon. The opt-in thing is some data-protection nonsense created by god-knows-which govt authority for our "safety" - appears to be just another level of mindless bureacracy to me. However, we can all sleep safer at night knowing that bona fide websites such a this won't be sharing your information without your consent. You, however, are already "opted-in" which means that your area rep has contact details for you. You tick or untick a box when you sign up for membership. You can contact the other members by using Private Messaging on here - probably more secure than giving out your details online - but hey, if you're happy to.... The only thing is that anyone can access the Forums, not only Club members, and you cant verify who these "guests" actually are. Once in a blue moon you do get "bots" and other internet weevils trying to infiltrate the system so....

Last October I had a crash with my '14 plate VW golf in Luton which would have been a drag were it not for the fact that I don't think I've ever been to Luton. I only discovered it when Bedfordshire police tried to summons me. It then transpired that I had FIVE cars all insured through the same building in Petreborough but with different firms - all large household names. They'd insured these cars -nice ones too- with nothing more than my name and address. Apparently someone in Birmingham "owned" them but I had insured them. It seems farcical because when I try to insure anything the companies want everything including my shoe size, inside leg measurement, name of parent's first pet etc etc. Just goes to show that the whole "security" thing is a load of drivel.

Hopefully you and Gregor can meet up and sort out his timing issues. I'll contact the other Fifers near you guys and see if they wanna meet up too.

Upwards and onwards

Stewart

Steve, thanks for your encouragement, as ever. Little acorns, as they say. Unfortunately there are so few shows up here that would be of any relevance but we'll see. Still early days. And thank you again for all your work as Dating Officer, I'll post in your resignation message but without you and your great work, there would be many fewer Bantams on the road. We all owe you big time smile

Hi all! Just caught this thread and quite pleased that the Scottish Branch has been relaunched. Originally from St.Andrews, I'm located in Dundee. My daily bike is a 2002 Fazer 600 and not long rebuilt a 1979 BMW R80/7 after 14 years off the road so, needing a project, chucked some pocket money at a 1967 Bantam D7 Silver which was in need of some restoration. Too far gone for an oily rag resto plus it had been painted the wrong colour so a rebuild it is. So far I've been cleaning parts up and just started a trial fit of parts to see what fits and what's missing. Happily, not too many parts needed but some imperial nuts and bolts have to be sourced. Looking forward to getting it up and running and possibly meeting  up with some other owners. I'm a member of the Scottish Classic Motorcycle Club who regularly meet up at Leuchars and The Wee Smokey Meets at Arbroath. I'm keeping a pictorial record of the rebuild on my Flickr page :- ** Please log in to view ** .. not too many pics at the mo but will add more as the build progresses. I've also put a wee intro vid on YouTube:-

t=16s

That's it for now. Hope to meet up with some of you in due course.

Hi! Yep. I'm a member of SCMC and attend most of the meets at Leuchars and the Wee Smokey meets at Arbroath. I've been going to the Bacon and Brakes meets at the Rhynd Cafe near Leuchars. There's a classic car and bike meet there 1st Sunday of the month.  Look out for the White BMW and you'll find me.

Ian.
