Hi All, Just stripped down the gearbox on a '57 cub. Now, despite the fact that the various diagrams incl. Draganfly state that it should  have a single oil seal for the miain gear/final drive, it does in fact have the old felt ring and washer arrangement. I'd already ordered the oil seal and, on offering it up to the casing, it seems to be same inner/outer diameter and width as the felt. Does anyone know if it's a straight swap oilseal for felt and if this was a period "upgrade" - I'd be surprised if a felt bush was the best that the Empire that the sun never set on could come up with....

Cheers guys,

Stewart

But the sun was already setting then, helped by the 'we've always done it that way - it'll do' attitude of UK industry at that time.

A 'modern' bearing with a single seal (on the outside face) should be perfectly adequate.

Yes, Bob, we were bankrupt by that time so I suppose an old felt washer would have to do.... I've ordered one from Draganfly and also have the newer plastic oil seal, so will compare them and fit accordingly.

No change there then.

I understood your post as meaning that the bearing was a single-sided seal, in which case an additional  felt seal would just be a space filler, so a plastic one should be just as good.

So the felt "seal" has arrived and sits neatly in its housing. Archaic but rather charming, in a John Betjeman/ Brideshead Revisited kind if way....... Whether it stops oil spewing out the drive sprocket, we'll have to wait and see! Whilst I admire Draganfly's expertise and stock, they dont half take the proverbial sometimes - £3.95 p&p for one felt washer the size of a 50p......

Happy days
