Hi Guys

Thinking of  buying a little tourer, a B40.

Choice is either one of the older ones with timing side plain bearing or should best be hanging out for one of the later(fewer) models, one with all roller bottom end?

Pros and  cons, reliabilty etc etc?   Like, does it really matter anyway?

Your considered opinons, experiences of this marque would be well and truly appreciated.

.

The B40 is a very pleasing bike for shorter trips .The differences in the engine are to do with the bikes interveaving with other models rather than any profound engineering problem. The one I have experience of was an ex Royal Signals display bike in effect a junior Victor. They are not sloggers that's the B31.Spares are infinite and cheap. On balance I would refurbish a cheap one rather than pursue some of the rather optimistically priced Trailer Queens which still could be problematic.Far too much money is spent on cosmetics than mechanism; they are for riding. The BSA owners club is your next port of call.Nutley Blue?  I live in Nutley E/sus. Beige springs to mind....

If you intend riding it regularly go for the later roller engine. It is an all round better bike. No brass bushes allowing oil to escape from the big end and no worn distributor shaft making it almost impossible to time accurately.

modern bits fix that .The early bikes are now very rare though,in all if I were thinking of a nice bumbler the AMC's seem better value. In fact the Bullet will do much the same cheap as frits.

Thanks John...once had woolly B31, last of the line Zurcon Green with a loom and confusion as thick as my wrist  I then but a youth, a thin on going through the ranks to the all ally one with a carb as big and shiny as a bugler boy's...  Now a B40, I've never ridden one as yet!  Attaction being an overgrown 250, weight, maneuverable, best no peppy version.  Have seen (pics) Olive Green/Black with attributes diametrically opposite to those of thin lad wannabes g-t-t-r
