I have always provided information for free on people’s bikes when asked. Most of us have one or two Bantams and I don’t mind at all giving people the information from the factory records. I will continue to offer this service until the new dating officer takes over at the next AGM.
However, I have over the last month or two had a person asking for information on a lot of machines. Came in ones and twos at first, then around 10 in one request. I queried if he was a trader at the time, he denied it. I had my suspicions, but gave the information on the bikes anyway.  I have yesterday had another request from the same guy for another 12. Now it may take a couple of minutes to check one of the later bikes, but can take a good few minutes more with the D1’s even with my database on Excel. Add the time involved to write the information down and it is taking up far too much of my time without any benefit to the club. In view of this for the short time I have left in post I have made these changes. Anyone can have information on bikes they own for free up to 5 times per year. If you need more than 5 checks then each one extra will cost £5.
This does not in anyway affect dating certificates, just the casual requests for information. I do not believe this will affect 99% of people in any way, it’s just the odd one who abuses the free service and my goodwill.

Current bikes......1958 D5, a 77 Suzuki GT250 and a 77 Honda CB125S. I have a B175 in the workshop and a 76 Honda C90 waiting its turn. A 1980 Honda CB400N waiting for MOT.  Everyday ride is a 2011 Harley Davidson Sportster.

That amount of bikes does seem excessive for the normal enthusiast. I agree with you Steve if they want that much information then they should pay you for your time. 5 per year is more than enough for any one individual.

Good on you, Steve. If it was me, I'd be charging £20 if there's over 5! Chancers!

No, I wouldn't say who it was, but it wasn't Bantam John... I believe he trades under a different name now in any case?

I would think so with those sort of numbers, but he said he wasn’t. Though he would say that wouldn’t he? Anyway, it doesn’t matter now, he has gone well over the 5 limit!
