Hello,

In January 2021 I bought my first ever British bike; a Bantam D14/4. Partly as a lockdown project to keep me busy (and it has!), and also to scratch a two-stroke itch I've had for a while now. I considered a Yamaha DT175 MX as I had one many years ago, but prices have gone mad.

I've grown to love the Bantam and will not let it go. It was fully restored prior to my purchase and not used since that was done, so I'm trying to resolve all the issues which often ensue after major work. A 1.5 mm head gasket from Rex Caunt Racing has calmed the compression down a bit and advancing the timing slightly to 18 degrees BTDC has made it a good starter, when the Amal carb plays its part! I've retained the points and 6 volt electrics but added a Gammatronix unit to reduce maintenance.

I'm looking to go the Mikuni route shortly as I had to push the bike 1.5 miles home the other day; not good at nearly 60 years of age. With all the many Japanese bikes I've owned over the years, I can't recall a carburettor problem that wasn't quickly resolved, though to be fair none of them were 53 years old or even close.

I've been tinkering with bikes since I was 16 and had a Honda SS50 to go to work on. I currently own a BMW R1150 GS, A BMW F650 Funduro, A Honda C90 (everyone should have one), a Yamaha XC125 scooter and of course my Little Chicken. All are on the road and about as good as they can be. The plan is to sell the XC125 at some point, as the BSA will take its place as a vehicle to go in the back of my van on holidays to run around on in exotic destinations, whenever that may be. I will also enjoy the Bantam for local runs of course and maybe a trip to the Stafford Bike Show in the future, when it has gained my full confidence!

Regards, Jamy.

Hello Jamy, welcome. Hope you get your carb issues sorted one way or another. I had a Funduro many years ago, it remains one of my favourite 'wish I'd kept it' bikes. You may find the Bantam does not actually perform any better than the scooter, but no doubt you'll decide when it's back on the road.

Thank you Cocorico and Glen.

The Funduro is as near mint as it can be. It came from a dealer who bought it from a collector. Only 5K miles when I bought it 2 years ago.

Cheers, Jamy.

Hello Jamy.

Congratulations on your purchase of the D14/4 and a very warm welcome to The Bantam Club, I am sure you will enjoy your Bantam and The Club.

I am not sure where in Derbyshire you are, however you might like to have a look possibly where your nearest Section meet up and the activities they got up to prior to Covid 19, details are available under the Area Reps Section - South Derbyshire and Nottingham. Please feel free to give me a call if you would like any further details.

Regards

Giles.
