Great summary.
Will you be building yourself a starter roller?
One rebuilt knee(still all my own), and then housemaid`s/clergyman`s knee with my kick leg last year, thanks to my TT500,I`ve started to collect the kit to build a battery-powered and an engine-powered one....two Mini starter motors, two lightweight Generator type engines,I need some bearings, rollers and chain...or maybe I`ll try pulleys&belts....

Hi Dave, yes i get to Jacks most Sundays, then on to the pub. One being Sywell aerodrome, that's a nice ride from Jacks on the b roads. As to the Heeler TT500 knee, ouch ouch. I know starting the 500 singles we were open to some pain when they kicked back. Question,, Does the tt500 have a disengaging kick start gear at the end of its kick start swing / stroke as my other brother has on his SR500 Yamaha. Next time i get my 500 Red hunter back from Colin, i'm going to modify the brute not to kick me back or more to the point. When it does kick back, the kicker will be already disengaged..  "Haha Missed Me", did the great Man from up north say..

Hi Roy,I reckon I need to bond with her, haven`t spent enough time with the old gal.I`ve been told I`m not following through properly,as the actress said to the bishop.Bought an XT500 in `80 that I ran on&off for 9yrs,a real favourite of mine, and that was no bother, maybe I have to admit to being younger then?I however did something very stupid with it.The kickstart snapped at the swivel and while waiting for a new one to arrive,I welded it facing outboard,so I could kick the thing over, and several kickbacks later, the kickstart mechanism punched a hole through the back of the crankcases.Due for a strip anyway,I had her down completely and farmed out the case welding to a chap who was ace, from Nottm,he had no fingers, but best alloy welder around in those days.I then fibreglassed the hole in the clutch cover, rebuilt, job done.
I know not of the modification you mention, not had an SR down, only done bit&bobs on them.I`m intrigued,I`ve clearly missed out on a health-preserving option, please tell me more!
Cheers,
Blue

Yeah Blue. U have 500cc single cylinder "Pull Back", cured only by changing to full "follow through" as your mate told you.. Joking apart there is a mechanism that stop the knees getting battered...To late for you i spose...eek. Here is a short read, but you may like to test your setup. Remove spark plug , place bike in gear. Push the kicker using full follow through and then keeping the kicker down, move the bike backwards a foot. If the kicker starts to come back up, youve bust summut... ** Please log in to view **
And cuz i like me Bantam u get to hear the 2014 one...again

Enjoyed the clip, she sounds crisp! Thanks for the link...I`d always thought those mashed-up pieces folk found in the sump were stop plates,I didn`t realise they were to do with a disengaging system.
So I`m back at Roy`s surgery, tried what you suggested, kickstart doesn`t stay down in the 1st place. Most depressions of the kickstart make a Bantam-esque sound at the end of the stroke...like when Bantam quadrant teeth are missing, but TT kickstart returns ok(or should that be,not ok,haha?).I did give her a full service last year and found no nasty surprises in the sump.Engine is one of the quietest I`ve heard, suspect not had much use.Looks like I`d better remove the clutch cover to have a butchers?
Thanks again...I suppose I`d better be mindful this is a Bantam-related section 🙂

Hybrid Bantam section. Have a peek inside your Bantam clutch cover
, bearing in mind that the system as i see it, disengages at the bottom of the swing to keep your knees out of a & e. Plus i think it does it's thing at the top, to stop it smashing the cases...Too clever i think.. Enjoy having a scratch over what you find.eh.

Thanks Roy,I`ll have a look when the workshop has a berth available.
What protects the casings from exploding on old Brit big singles on kickback, like the original black with gold pin-striping 1937 Rudge 500 Special I stupidly sold in `85 before I`d fixed her up?Too busy getting Guzzis and LCs etc to go fast.
Tell you what also really hurts the knee and all the leg bones....is when the footrest falls off  & boot sole hits the road at 40mph(XT 1981)
I will concentrate on the Bantam for now 🙂

Haha,very good...but my D14 still kicks back now&again.
I have a few of those quadrants with teeth missing and worn ratchet gears, picked up in job-lots,waiting to be used in welded metal sculptures. Some riders seem to lunge at the kickstarter for some reason,as if it`s a venomous snake

February 7, 2012

ok. She kicks you back. So here is a Question. If i had a dodgy knee and wanted to create " follow through" on a Bantam ,that has a quadrant as above. How many teeth would i grind off the quadrant. Thats the thought i have with the burman box on Big RED the bruiser, when she comes home to me...Yeah, i know about the heavy boot, my brother has one kicking the D1 over...My Arrow bantam gets a gentle prod and theres a little humour to it as she has a gearlever as a kickstart.haha.Â

November 16, 2011

Good thinking Roy....so among my toothless quadrants,a form of Darwinian natural selection has been taking place, haha.I see I`ll have to play around with your idea on the bench.
I was looking through a box of Indian Enfield bits and found a humongous gear lever(at least I think that`s what it is,never having owned an RE),with large splined dia fitment, and I remember thinking it looked more like a kickstart or even a brake lever!Unfortunately some of the splines have ripped out,so not sure what that`s going to end up being cannibalised for. Do you think they`d notice if I entered such a combo in the six-day trials?
I stupidly missed such an engine fairly local to me for around £300 last year, thought auction was ending a day later....but we all know what thought did....my favourite being,"he got out of bed to tuck his feet in because he thought they were sticking out of the end of the bed"
I`ll leave the one engine I`ve got where it is I reckon 🙂 ....but I do have a spare 350 motor though, and that has an auto decomp valve lifter...Mmmmm.

well. took her 4 a spin a couple of times... Handles very good, loads of power and the gearing is not bad, but i may drop 3 on the rear some time...Neutral is easy to click into when warm. I'm sure you know all about the Gamma clutch drag issues on these engines.haha. Yeah, happy daysÂ
