Nice bitsa Bantam, looks just the ticket for a bit of off-roading and country tarmac too.

Several on here have used trailer cable for the main wiring harness, something I look forward to trying on one of my rebuilds.

.Regarding the wiring it is a 3 wire alternator.

doesn't look like the is a battery fitted so it could have been converted to 12 volt
which would make a rewire easy

update.bike completely broke down, except engine which i took off the head and barrel, no carbon buildup whatsoever on head and piston.barrel measures 61.38 to 6.48 with no scores or ridge at the top  good news, bad news 2 broken fins.piston is flat top with 3 rings {is this correct} which i can just make out std and a number 17  93 think its a 9.took a ring off and measured in bore with end gap of 25tho width of ring is 90tho.not yet tried bare piston in barrel.checked big and little end no play whatsoever,so overall a right result, plan to strip engine and check bearings, renew oil seals.

Where`s the fin damage, head or barrel?

With that high-level exhaust system, engine can soon bog down with fuel mix after much kicking over, if seals are a bit suspect.

I fitted a 3-ring piston to my D14 years ago after running out of domed 2-ring jobbies, and it ran beautifully.

Radiusing the ports is very important, the chaps that do the rebores don`t generally do that little job for the customer.

Ring gap at .025" is excessive, but I`ve had them run ok like that.

Haynes says ring end gap .009"-.013", ring width .062", ring radial depth .078"

Instead of sticking feelers between piston and bore, treat yourself to a cheap-cost digital calipers for measuring piston dia top and bottom and 1/2" down the bore.

yes  i measured with digital caliper, the broken fins are on the barrel the two at the top.think barrel is d10 as inlet port is 26mm and the head also i think as it has a squish band, plug hole at an angle.had it running when i first got it ran ok.looking at it had not ran for years,no history of the bike at all.do not know to stick with flat top piston and get new rings or a new domed piston.i think they must have fitted the flat top piston to lower compression for trials work.think i will strip down and do oil seals and check bearings for peace of mind.

update, most of the bike is now finished i replaced the oil seals with viton seals and fitted a domed piston.Today i set the timing and was chuffed to bits it started first kick and sounded lovely when revving and also at tickover.Last job to do is the petrol tank to prepare and paint (can't decide what colour) will post some pics when finished. Thanks all for answers to the few queries that i had.
