I've been told a wire brush on a stick, or immersing in caustic soda work work. Which is more effective, and which the laziest that still works? I was going to use a wheelie bin and a sack of soda.

Being a lazy slob myself, I'll refer you to the many posts already in existence. Just use the search as provided by Stoo.

This recipe is for the silencer. Get yer goggles, gloves and pinny on, stuff a freshly killed rat(other stuffing agents are available), in the lesser aperture, place over a galvanised bucket, fill silencer with a caustic soda mix, agitate as & when the mood takes you, until eventually the rat dissolves...job nearly done. Rinse with hot water & detergent mix. Job done.

...or burn it out with the gas torch as I have on occasion.

That's what I want to hear! Jessie brings me a rat a week (disgusting neighbours). I'll use the next one.
