The 59 Club is a church based motorcycle club and, as its name suggests they are 60 years old. Perhaps uniquely they were allowed a dedicated service in Saint Pauls Cathedral on Saturday 4th May.

Two rides to the Cathedral were organised and SERV Surrey & South London were asked to escort the run from All Saints Church, Hanworth. I escorted a learner rider on my Bantam while the main group were escorted by the liveried bikes.

Ten bikes were put on display in front of the main steps while the rest of us parked on the north side.

Again, probably uniquely, a motorcycle was displayed inside the Cathedral while, after the service, the DeanIMG_20190504_134719191_HDR-Copy.jpgIMG_20190504_134844870_HDR-Copy.jpgIMG_20190504_153406810_HDR-Copy-Copy.jpgIMG_20190504_153734880_HDR-Copy.jpgIMG_20190504_163759385.jpgIMG_20190504_175624678_HDR-Copy-Copy.jpgIMG_20190504_175644827-Copy.jpg went outside and blessed the bikes.

All Saints was a new church built through the efforts of Rev. Bill Shergold, who was one of the founders of the club

Nice to see Bikers and London portrayed in a positive light for once .

I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong

Excellent - am I correct in thinking that it originated in Birmingham (Digbeth to be precise), or was that a 'Chapter'?

The club started as a church youth club in Hackney. As was normal then, lots of the kids graduated to motorcycles and one of the helpers, Bill Shergold was also a keen motorcyclist.

The motorcycle side of the club took off in 1962 when Bill went to the (then notorious) Ace Cafe to encourage the cafe racers to join his youth club. When he moved to Paddington the motorcycle section followed him.

Currently the club has two centres, Plaistow (weekly) and Hanworth (monthly).

(culled from the short history printed in the service booklet).

Ah well, that's my memory for you. A bit of research and I find I was thinking of the Double Zero Club, founded by the Rev David Collyer in the late 60's.
