It was a very enjoyable meeting, even the weather was kind to us.

Thanks to all who attended.

Graham.

D1 Renovation; had it for 50 years and thought I ought to start :)

However, as I thought it might take a while, bought a B40 to ride.

I also didn't make it. The D7 seized up on me as I was riding it up the road. I have had it 30 years and it has never done that before.  Always been a good runner.   I have a feeling it is thsi new fuel ................... anyway let me know the next one and I will bring a spare engine on the back carrier !!

That's twice in a row isn't it sponge?I had a breakdown but luckily was just a broken wire and a 5 minute fix.

I am getting quite concerned. Every time I take a Bantam out it seizes up on me within abpout half a mile. Piston ring gaps fine, fuel mix fine, ports radiussed off. Carb and ignition still set up as they always were - fresh 97octane Esso fuel with semi-synth Mobil 2T oil - so its either the fuel or something new has crept into my life - I will keep trying but if nothing changes then nothing will change.  Have always had a Bantam since my school days and never had so many problems as now. Getting quite brassed off really ......Sponge

Anybody got any ideas ?

Has it been rebored recently? Are there any marks on the piston where its seized?if there are any marks knock them back with a bit of Emery paper. The fact its happening when it's not really hot suggests something is a bit tight somewhere.

I agree with SM.

Has it ever run ok for you or is the engine a new unknown one.

Is it indicating its running weak in any way...how is it jetted?

Does it seize up if you run the engine without it actually being on the road ?

That will eliminate anything iffy in the gearbox/drive mechanism.

Graham.

Engine starts, runs and ticks over fine. It has a atom ignition unit fitted and I was asking if anybody knows how they work because it doesn't like being timed up.  Seems to run fine on full retard . I think it siezed up because I tried to set the timing. Its the only thing I have changed in the last 30 years.

Sorry Sponge, but I don't know anything about that ignition unit.

It would have be quite a long way out to run so hot it seizes up though.

One of the reasons I prefer to stay with std points ignition.

All very basic and easy to fix at the side of the road.

Is this still about Rivington or can anyone join in? wink

As far as I'm aware, the Atom works by 'sensing' the peak magnetic flux produced as the rotor magnets pass the stator poles, then feeding it back into the ht coil to produce the spark (but don't ask me how!).

Assuming your D7 is magneto ignition, isn't the timing fixed, as D1 and D3? If you have changed the timing, maybe the Atom is still trying to trigger at a different point?

But you say you've been using it for years with no problem - so it can't  be that, unless something has happened, such as the crank moving in the flywheel and changing the assumed timing point? dunno

Whatever, keep us informed. I know that the std points system is easy to understand and possibly easy to fix, but it if you don’t have that fitted, you can't fix it!

A hitherto reliable mod suddenly failing is puzzling - do you have a spare Atom to try, or did I miss that?
