Hi All

Just getting into this and looking at registering my bantam with the DVLA. I have an old tax disc from 1976, but you cannot make out any writing on it. I also have the old logbook. The old tan/buff one from 1970 ish.  The numbers match and the registraion plate is with the bike and all matches. I'm hoping this is good enough to re register it and keep the plate with the bike, also qualify as MOT and tax exempt.

My main question is: How complete does the bike have to be to register it??  My frame is pretty bare and the engine is in pieces in a couple of crates.  It would be a shame to spend the next year or so restoring it all to find out i cannot register it!  I have a picture of the bike with wheels, mudguards, handle bars, seat and side panels on it, but no engine and the engine is totally stripped in a couple of crates.

Would they accept this for a photo??  I can get the rubbings and close up photos.

Also do i get the original documents back or shall i send in photo copies??

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy

Welcome to the club ,

You will be able to apply for the original registration if you have the old log book .

There is a link section on the BSA Bantam Club website that gives great information and guide for registration process.

Basically you will need a Dating Certificate and BSA Factory records of your machine as part of the application .

So what you will need to do is

Photo's of your bike, front ,rear side views, engine and frame numbers .

One photo signed as declaration from a club member or Doctor , teacher , police.

Rubbings of the engine and frame numbers .

complete a V55/5 form obtained from the DVLA (link on the BSA Bantam website) or post office .

there is a guide on what and how to fill in the form on the BSA Bantam Website .

Once you have done the above , the you send the application to me along with £15 cost for producing the Dating Cert

I will process the application check that the details of the application produce a dating cert , extract the machine details from the BSA Factory despatch books, when the pack is ready to send off to the DVLA.

Its not that daunting and i will and where and when you need it .

I hope this is helpful.

Please email me at the Dating office email address , which will be better for any further correspondence

Hi Andy .

The machine needs resemble a Motorcycle and not a basket case. As long as the frame number is readable and not tampered with and the frame is in one piece there won't be an issue getting it registered . V765 form is also needed for the original registration .

For peace of mind , You can email me photos of the frame and engine numbers and log book , i'll do a check in the BSA records .

using the email address we can exchange contact numbers and discuss in detail further .

Thanks

Hi Tim

Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate the help.

I have the frame in one piece with some of the fittings still fitted to it. The engine is stripped and in crates, but the all important engine number is visible and i will get the rubbings etc.. ready.

If you are happy, i will e-mail all the bits over to you this week and then forward them on recorded delivery once you give me the OK to do so.

I'm currently working nightshift this weekend, but will have some time this week to gather all the information required.

For the signed photo, would an MOT tester be able to sign it?

I take it i'm not allowed to sign my own photos?????

Thank you again

HI Andy

No problem when you're ready , I work shifts too , so i know where your coming from .

I would say the MOT tester would be ok to sign the photo's , unfortunately you are not allowed to sign them yourself .

thanks

Hi Tim, I am in a similar situation with a green log book and an old tax disc pertaining to the bike ( D14) but no engine,  although I do have a D7 engine ready to fit, is that permitted and will I be able to retain the original registration in this situation ?

Regards

Eric.

Hi Eric

There won't be an issue if you fit the D7 engine in the D14 frame , this will not affect the application .

please email me @ ** Please log in to view **

for further discussions and details

Well today the new logbook arrived and now the old bike is back on the radar of the dvla.

All in it took just over a month from initial post above to sending documents and photo's, then waiting for dvla.

Just got to get it put back together and then we're ready for the first ride in around 40 years!!  Just got to get cracking with the rebuild!!

Thanks again to Tim the dating officer for your help in achieving this!!!
