I've just bought a BD2s frame as the basis for a project. Is there any way of telling whether it had a D1 or a D3 engine fitted originally. Numbers are clear, but all the sites I can find with lists seem to imply it could be either.

As far as I know it could be either. The rest if the cycle parts might have offered an answer, as would any traces of original paint; mist green for a D1 and dove grey for a D3.

Given the choice, I'd always pick a D3 over a D1 for rideability, and if you're starting with a bare frame then you legitimately can choose what you like.

As Glen said the colour may give you a clue also the forks . If it has light weight forks D1 heavy weight D3 .
