I am looking for some information on the inside diameter of the laminations of the stator in a Wipac alternator for my 68 D14/4. I understand that the rotors O/D and hence Stator I/D are different between the Wipac and Lucas units, but what should the I/D of a wipac unit be?

Thanks

the Wipac Rotor is 72 mm the Lucas is 74mm and the gap between rotor and stator is 8 Thou minimum

50s and early 60s Lucas Rotors were 70mm which is up to RM18 while the RM19 and later has the 74mm

bow What a fount of arcane knowledge! I personally can't think of anything less likely to be asked, unless dnmalc is thinking of making one from scratch - in which case I look forward to following it's progress. tip-my-hat

No I am Derek Malcolm not Domenic.

The reason for the question was that I was trying to identify what came with my basket case. It turns out that I have an old Lucas stator and a Wipac rotor, the old stator looks as if I can put it in the lathe and open up the bore of the laminations otherwise it is a new stator. So nothing ventured nothing is gained I will try to machine it over the weekend and I will put up some photos if it is successful.

Hi Domenic, Derek, Malcolm, Mike, Cocorico, sunny, Lucas, Wipac.
Yes, It will be interesting to see what output is forthcoming from a Wipac rotor and a Lucas stator. Are the windings similar to the Wipac?
I am terrible at remembering names.
Mike.

Might be worth asking if anyone has a spare Lucas rotor or Wipac stator before possibly making the Lucas stator unusable. Could be worthwhile keeping it as the Lucas models are less common than Wipac. I do have a spare Wipac stator, by the way.

The output is very dependent upon air gap. and number of turns. the air gap with a Lucas rotor seems to be around 0.4mm or 16 thou which is not inconsistent with Mike F's post. The mod I am proposing would still allow the stator to be used with the wipac rotor or further modified to take the 74mm Lucas rotor so nothing really is lost.

As 70mm rotors are likely to be over 60 yr old, these rotors have a high risk of breaking up and totalling a crankshaft as happened on my Tiger TR6
