Where are you Bola?  I'm in North Yorkshire and I'm happy to pinstripe the tank for you if the rest of the painting's finished and you've done the panel if you can get it to me with some 3m tape (I'm nearly out of it). I have plenty of maroon and gold paint, (not sure what red you need) . Should only take me an hour or so.

Bola,

The top tank in your photos (black with red and gold pinstripes) is mine. I did the pinstriping with computer cut self adhesive vinyl. It's been there about 3 or 4 years now and has only started to move in one spot because I did not clear coat it properly. It bent around the corners perfectly. The part that moved was rubbed on by my knees.

The spacing of the stripes and size/shape of the cream section seem to vary as much as a politicians promise. I have looked at a lot of photos of un-restored examples and some show the shape I chose, others have a flat top line, others again have a considerably smaller shape altogether etc.

On the D1 both stickers have the bantam facing the front.

Again thanks all for your help,

Kirk I'm in Swindon (North Wiltshire) so a bit away from you,

So many good suggestions that I'm still not sure what to do.

I've checked the 3M tape and might just use that in red and gold to do the stripe's. The issue with that is the join. Can someone post a pic where the best place to put the join when using a tape to pinstripe?

Spraying might also be an option however, I'm going to the Classic car and bike show in NCE Birmingham soon so will check if I can find a pin striper and get out of doing it myself!

Hi Bola,

If you can put 3M tape on for the pinstripe, then you can paint it on. All you need to do is put the stripe on then put another strip of tape butting up to it either side, then pull off the original one which is now in the middle. All you have to do then is paint over the gap with a modelling brush. That's all I did.

Just have a play with the first stripe, you can reposition it as much as you like until you are happy that it's perfect before you add the strips either side. You really will find it easy and, if you really struggle, which I don't think you will, just go with your original plan so nothing to lose.

When you have the two parallel strips with the gap between, before painting, I just gently sanded off the paint shine with 44 grit paper folded to fit in the gap to ensure a key. You don't need to worry about sanding away the tape, it's quite resilient.

Still happy to do it for you, it will cost you probably a tenner to post it both ways but it's a lot easier than you think.

The bird to the front end of the bike looks more natural to me, that's how I'll eventually hope to do mine.

You can read it thus, BSA, (picture of) Bantam?

Not Bantam (picture of) BSA?

Seems logical to me.

Four now on the road and at least several in bits.

I'm going to try the pin striping! fingers-crossed

Also Looking at the post's i'll be using the below transfer orientation, as is on the original tank shown by Coco and the only "Old" pic I can find of a similar bike: (Bantam (picture of) BSA on both left and right of the bike)

2-1.JPG

3-1.JPG

Old-pic.JPG

This looks the most original.

Thanks for all the help, i'll put up pic of my tank when done.

In my post above I said to sand the shine off with 44 grit paper - hopefully you spotted the mistake - I meant 400 grit!

Good luck!

The first picture is a tank that I painted, I took a tracing of the original painted insert and striping before I stripped it all down.

This paint job was a perfect reproduction of this particular (Australian exported)D3 Major.hope-that-helpsHans

1950 D1 plunger for daily use, Concourse 1948 D1 rigid, 1949 Aus. PMG replica D1 project and a 1949 rigid D1 survivor.

I stand corrected, I'd forgotten all about that old Ozzy black and white pic.

I imagine it would look odd though if folk from the two direction decal camps met up at a large gathering.

Or is it just me.

Hi, I'm currently restoring a D3 at the moment and i'm about to add all transfers.

After much homework and help from you, I've now confirmed the tank stickers but now i'm debating about the others!

Are there any pictures of the original stickers ie Side panels, "made in England", gear selectors anywhere?

I don't want to add and clear coat the stickers i have only to show the bike and find out some stickers are for another type of bantam doh

Thank you

Hello Bola, here are some pics of either side of my D3, completely original as far as I know. There is no gear indicator sticker - they were only on early D1s.D3LHS.JPGD3RHS.jpg

Hi Bola,

Go to the VMCC club website, click on transfers and then when you select the transfer it tells you the year that decal was used so, for the side panels there were slightly different colours for different years. I bought mine from here and also from Classic Transfers, both will advise on the phone if your stuck and both provided a great service.

Cheers Coco,

So only 4 stickers on the whole bike? x2 on the tank and the 2 on the tool box and battery cover?

I had a "Made in England" sticker with my D3 sticker set. forgot where I got them from now... might have been Classic Transfers.

Also do you have anything above the back light? did some have the arm's with 150cc underneath it in that location?

Yes, only 4 on mine, there are no signs of the remains of any others - but it is 60 years old, everything looks original but I couldn't guarantee that.
