IMG_2441-copy.jpgjac-971.jpgHello hello,

Thanks everyone so far for the great advice on my recommissioning of JAV 971.

A little bit of history:
The bike belonged to my dad, I believe he took it part exchange at his car dealership in Falkirk, Scotland, sometime in the mid 1980's, and was put in pride of place in the showroom to display.
My first taste of motorcycling was trips up and down the lane near our house as a kid on the back of it, and when I was (just about) tall enough to get on the thing on my own, the bug bit. There's something magical that happens when you creep up to 20mph, without pedalling!

Since then, the bike has been mothballed in my mother's garage for about 15 years, and I decided that after mending nearly everything else I owned and not having another project to while away the winter evenings, it was time to get the old nail back on the road. So with a few phone-calls the bike came down to London, where I've lived for the last ten years.

I thought I should start keeping a record of the progress, such as it is, and give you all a little look into the tiny "garage" (in fact a small storage unit in north London with another pal's really nice Gold Flash) and how it's all going.

Here she is!

That looks great, Harry, and an entirely appropriate setting for an early post-war bike from Birmingham!

Decided to head up to the locker tonight to grab the engine out of the frame, decided on a top end rebuild and a degunging of the bits that stick out, there's not much space to work in the locker (as I mentioned, it's actually just a small room full of water filtration equipment that makes a godawful noise) I figured it'd be much more civilised to sit down at the kitchen table and work on it. You have correctly surmised I live alone.

Just waiting on a few bits turning up in the post, piston rings and primary chain for starters, till then it's a conversation piece in the middle of the room.

Had to carry the engine back on the bus, not looking forward to doing it again, they're heavy little «censored» for their size!

Fantastic looking bike, just the way it should look. Good luck with your oily rag resto.

When I was still at school, I carried a £5 autojumble find D7 engine ten miles home on the carrier of my bicycle.

you are so lucky having that bike, with so many it was the first bike they ever owned the start of being independent of public transport
and then so many people like me moved on to a bigger bike as soon as they passed the driving test but still probably remember that first bike better than anything that followed it

Hear hear, numerous bikes since my first (a C15), but I would still like it back.

Polishing things up and removing 50 years of baked on garbage called for 00 grade steel wool and a selection of podcasts.

Hopefully get some tyres on this weekend, pending the arrival of some rim tape...
