As I got everything together to re-assemble my 1951 D1 forks I noticed in the parts catalogue that I was missing "shock absorber" part number 90-5079, and I hadn't found one on stripdown. It was available so ordered 2 and received 20 inches of 1/4 ethanol resistant fuel hose which I assume I need to cut in half. I had thought it was to fit internally with the spring but looking at the parts catalogue it seems to be aligned with the headlight bracket. I cannot really see what function a piece of bendy fuel hose will perform can anyone enlighten me please.

It fits inside the springs (on my D3 anyway). I'm not sure it's actually a 'shock absorber', seems more like a device to reduce the noise made by the springs against the fork internals as the compress.

Does it just "float" within the spring, as much as the grease will allow, because I notice that the diameter of the tube permits it to enter the stanchion and so be secured at the lower end.

Have a look at Service Sheet 509 in the Members' Area for more info.
