I have just run my D7 without the points cover in place and it appears that the lighting coils are making contact with the flywheel and sparking. I presume that isn't normal? Can anybody advice how to solve this please.

Hi.
The lighting coils are fixed to the pole pieces with paxolin type wedges. It seems that the coils may have come loose and are rubbing on the flywheel. If that is the case then they are probably damaged and will need to be replaced. If you remove the stator you will probably see what's going on. Sometimes the coil wires are misplaced and rubbing on the flywheel.

Thanks, I'll take it apart at the weekend to have a look.

Just had the d7 apart. One of the lighting coils was loose. I found  that the wedges had worked their way out a bit. I managed to tap them back in with a small piece of plastic. Seems sucure now. Although there was marking on the coils they hadn't worn through the windings. I also discovered a clip for the points stuck to the magnets which probably didn't help. A bit late to start it up now so will try tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help.

A good example of the benefits of regular inspection of old motorbikes.
