How is a flat Fish Tail Silencer (90-3005) attached to the frame on a 1953 D1 plunger.   I haven't found found any                                                      attachment bracket or clip in my parts catalog.

Hi John, Have a look at this diagram. It has the set up, although I've never seen part 89 the "silencer support clip" ** Please log in to view ** The stud goes through the hole beside the bottom plunger on the frame. You'll need a spacer.  Someone will probably have some more pics for you.

All the best

Aha.. it doesn’t fit directly onto the frame, not having dismantled mine  and the fact the back of the silencer has been painted made me think it was all one, spacer and silencer. 🙂

Hi Guys,

Mystery solved.  Thanks for all the good info.  I checked with Dragonfly to see if they had any of the parts shown.                                                      They did have the spacer (in stainless) so I will probably get one from them.    I don't think the silencer support                                                           clip has anything to do with mounting the silencer although I don't know what it was used for.

I’d guess it is used to hold the speedo cable, but that is only a guess, my bike has been used off road so no speedo attached.. 🙂

I know that's what it's listed as but I can't see what it would be "supporting"? The competition bikes should have a high rise exhaust(?) at top of plunger, miles a away from that wee clip tucked in behind the fishtail....I would have thought. Maybe for a rigid?

Don’t think it’s big enough to go around any frame tube???

Since I originally posted this item I have received another parts list - D1 & D3.   It has the exact picture that TallGuy posted  from Dragonfly.  However the description list is different.    It does not say competition only  after the silencer items.  It says Competition, Rigid and spring.  It also does not list item 93 twice (the silencer) with two different part numbers.  Its just listed once as 90-3005 (the flat fish tail silencer).     I've seen some discrepancies in BSA parts lists on other models.

I agree with TallGuy in that in the picture of the clip it doesn't look large enough to to go around any frame tube.

Hi John,

thanks for the credit but it should go to Stewart as he posted the Dragonfly list, not me.. I just posted a poor photo of my rusting old bike.. lol.

Well done on the further research 🙂

Yes TallGuy you are correct, my mistake.   Thanks Stewart for posting that original parts list picture from Dragonfly.
