Hi,

My D1 is equipped with a Lucas Magneto, presumably generating 6V AC.

Can the Magneto be rewound to provide 12 volts and if so, is it worth it to get 12V ignition and a better supply of bright bulbs.

Thanks,

Graham.

D1 Renovation; had it for 50 years and thought I ought to start :)

However, as I thought it might take a while, bought a B40 to ride.

The Lucas IA45 alternator can give a 12volt output without a rewind
you will need to use a regulator/rectifier and some rewiring of the ign switch
its been covered before search the forum

Thank you Mike.

If anyone can provide a pointer to a discussion on this, I'd appreciate it.

Searching on "IA45, Lucas, Alternator, Magneto, 12 Volt" in a variety of combinations, has yielded no results.

I know that sometimes with Google, it's the order of what you type in, that can bring up different results.

Thanks Graham.

I am assuming that G1 and G2 probably provide +6 V and - 6 V, so providing a 12 V total output if combined.

Has anyone actually tried this and if so, what regulator / rectifier did you use ?

Regards,

Graham.

I've bought a copy of the Lucas IA45 alternator manual, so am hoping to look further at the 12 Volt output option further.

Has anyone tried using a 6 Volt to 12 Volt converter as an alternate approach, they seem relatively easy to get hold of ?

I also tried a 12 Volt LED with a view to a solution of the shortage of 6 Volt bulbs, but they need around 8 Volts to start to work.

Regards,

Graham.
