Hi,

once again I would like to test your wisdom..

My bike is a 1952 Lucas model with the more conical headlamp shell ( I believe ), slightly longer than the normal one.

I'm after a bracket to hold the headlamp shell, after looking around at different images I came across this bike on e-bay..

** Please log in to view **

Is that a slightly longer headlight bracket, which is what I would expect I need to accommodate the longer shell, or, is it somebody's home made creation?

Sorry, you'll have to scroll through the photo's in the link to see the bracket... looks an interesting project.. possibly a bit pricey though?

Cheers for your help in advance..

Heavy duty forks according to the ad. I'd be tempted by the bike itself apart from the price. But as regards the headlamp brackets - have they been used upside down? Looking at Piquet's example, they curve down away from the speedo, whereas this one curves up, towards the speedo. Maybe home-made replicas 'not quite right'?

Here's another - different headlight! not too easy to see without zooming.

Hi Mike,

cheers for posting the eBay photo..  pleased you haven’t come across a head lamp bracket like that, I was wondering if it was one of the many differences with the Lucas equipped bike. I’ve been watching a couple of places where they sell decent looking repro brackets plus the one on eBay.. seeing this made me wonder if I was looking for the wrong bracket..

can i also ask, what was the hole in the side of the bracket for?

I think you guys are right, it’s probably homemade..

just for interest, what would you value it at.. I paid £800 for mine, it has original log book with frame and engine numbers matching.. I even thought that was high but the gent had already dropped it a couple of hundred and wouldn’t go lower.. I decided I’d rather have it then not 🙂

cheers for the help ..

At the moment electrics being held up until I get a toolbox so I have somewhere to mount electrics too 🙂

The value is what you are prepared to pay! I'd have thought you paid a reasonable price, it depends just what you got. £1600 seems a bit much, but then it looks to be about complete, it's an early model of a rarer variety and there is the lure of a 'possible military link'. That's bait for a wider range of enthusiasts, too.

Looking back at my diary notes I am pretty sure that this bike was on sale next to (or near) the Villiers M/C stand at Stafford.  I remember the Lucas generator, the strange fork bottoms and the alloy mudguards.  Its not my cup of tea but perhaps some other club members,  who were at Stafford,  recall seeing it there ?

Hi Tallguy,

I also own a D1 lucas bantam and had the same problem. I bought a Wico headlight bracket from ebay but found it incorrect. the headlight bowl fastenings to bottom yoke dimensions were to small. I fabricated my own bracket from 14swg ( 2.0mm) sheet. being a sheet metal worker this was no problem, see photograph.

Back then I was an instructor in a college teaching sheet metal apprentices, i dont have the equipment nowadays, but I ould give you some dimensions for said bracket if you require..

Best wishes for 2020....Nick11.jpg

Hi all,

Following on from my previous post, I remembered I had these ( as photo) these were the head light brackets that came with my basket case lucas D1.

They do not look home made to me, but I have not seen any other head light brackets like these either, perhaps somone could help in identifying what  machine they came from.

Hi Stoo,

Well spotted, not thought of that. When I bolted the brackets to the bottom yoke. The opening was a perfect match for my headlight bowl, and it fitted perfectly. Could be coincidence, so I thought they must be head light brackets, but had not seen any like these before. Guess I was wrong...

A lot of parts were in boxes and a lot of parts were loose. It's a bit of a pick and mix also when you get a basket case job, so I opted for a Wicopac type bracket for my head light. Does the job and looks OK.
