I finally found a wiring harness on Ebay (254474933671) for A D1 with Lucas Electrics.   This harness has a Lucas socket on it for the switch.   The listing does not say which switch but I suppose its a Lucas PRS4.    I am going to contact them to find out.  I have a BSA C12 with a PRS8 switch and a C10.  They don't have a socket at the switch end of the harness.   I just put the wire ends in the terminals on the back of the switches.  Would anyone know how this socket attaches to the switch ?

Hi John,

TallGuy, another Lucas D1 owner, was looking for a knob for his PRS4 switch recently, he`ll perhaps know about any socket adaptation? Other Lucas D1 owners on here too. Mine`s a basket case, as are my `58 &`60 Tiger Cubs that I`ve managed to pick up one PRS8 for so far.

Cheers

Hi John,

I have just bought a PRS4 switch for my Lucas Bantam, it doesn't use a socket, the wires are attached directly to it..  as yet the wiring of mine has to be sorted, I don't have a wiring harness so I am going to make my own.. a very hard switch to find.

Regards,

Alan.

Hi again John,

When I got home tonight I looked on ebay and checked that wiring harness number you quoted I came up with an item listed as "BSA Bantam with Lucas electrics coil Ignition Wiring Harness with sub looms".

** Please log in to view **

Looking at the harness I could see a headlight wiring diagram in the background, blowing the picture up showed a different headlight shell and wiring diagram to the one I believe is the correct one.

If you check on this page..

** Please log in to view **

The second diagram down is the Lucas one, the third one down is a Wipac diagram that seems to match the diagram that comes with your wiring harness.

As far as I know the Lucas model has an ignition key / light switch.. the harness you have only supports a light switch, hence the socket.

I'm no expert on Bantams, I'm battling through the minefield of all the different combinations of models and years.. so don't take what I say as being right, I'm just posting my thoughts.

Regards,

Alan.

Hi Alan,

I think you are 100% correct.   I am going to contact this Ebay Wiring Harness maker and tell them they have the wrong wiring diagram.  So many thanks for your further research into this subject.   I will let all know  what I find out.

Hi Alan,

I received a reply from the maker of the wiring harness on Ebay advertised as a Lucas wiring harness but showing the wrong wiring diagram.                He said that I (you were) was correct.    That was not the right wiring diagram, It was just a standard picture he showed.    He said if I ordered one he guaranteed I would get the correct wiring harness.   If he makes the correct harness why not show the correct one with th correct wiring diagram.   I'm not sure if I will order one or not.

I agree,

even the wiring harness he shows must be the wrong one because it shows a socket as part of the harness, the PRS4 switch doesn’t have a socket.. I never like it when a seller doesn’t show the actual thing that they are selling. Possibly in this case he doesn’t show the actual harness because he hasn’t got one and makes them to order.

On the bright side, he did reply to your question 🙂

i think that seller comes recommended and he is in the GBG the club produces. He does make his harnesses to order and if you tell him what you want he will make it exactly as you require. I bought one from him and I supplied the Wipac switch sockets and he wired them in, free of charge. I also had an ammeter fitted in the headlamp, which he included in the harness, and labelled all the wires for me. It was for a D5 and it all went together perfectly. He is not a con man, he is a honest seller, if he says he will do something then he will. He works from home and is a small independent supplier, his harnesses are inexpensive compared to others. He can not afford to carry stock of harnesses that he might only sell one a month and then the buyer requires adjustments to it.

If you don’t trust him, or believe what he says, then don’t buy from him, but don’t cast doubt on the quality of his work without ever seeing it.

Lots of ebay sellers use generic photos. His ad seems quite clear, specifying Lucas, not Wipac, together with the statement that he can provide other models and makes but that he carries no stock. His feedback is immaculate too.

Hi,

I don’t think anyone cast doubt on the quality of his work only as to whether it was the correct harness..

Reading his small print even mentions this harness comes with a socket,

Included in this sale:

  • 1x BSA Bantam Wiring Harness.now fitted with in line fuse / rectifier Loom and Socket
  •  Generator Loom / Rear Tail lamp / stop Lamp Looms / Stop Lamp Switch Loom.
  • 1x BSA Bantam  Horn Wiring Loom.Coil loom
  • 1x Wiring diagram and Fitting Instructions.spare connectors”

Overall, it does lead to confusion.. Correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t believe the Lucas Bantam comes needing a socket.

It’s always awkward buying from eBay when you don’t get to see what you’re buying, caution is always advisable. It’s good that John has now got some feedback off someone who has purchased from him..

I never reply to slag anybody off, only to try and help.. 🙂

Regards,

Alan.

Hi all,

Now since I have found out more about this gentleman I will order a harness from him and tell him that I don't believe the PRS4 switch uses a socket.    He does have 100% good feedback.   He has since changed the picture  of this listing which now shows no socket or wiring diagram.    However in the description of the harness it still says it comes with a socket.   I assume he just forgot to remove that information.  I do agree with Alan in that it is very confusing to show a wrong picture and wiring diagram of an item you have for sale.

Regards,

John

Good to know that this guy has a good rep. Hopefully he does you a nice loom, John. I bought an awful one off ebay a couple of years ago. Gawd knows what I was thinking. My 8year-old coulda done a better job. Still, you live and learn....

The seller has had some very good feed back on the Francis Barnett forum for both Wipac and Lucas and will change things to suit your own needs.

Hi All,

Just a little feedback: I did order and receive a D1 Lucas wiring harness from this seller (Bill).    He enclosed a copy of the correct wiring Diagram.  The wires were color coded the correct color and the ends of the wires to the PRS4 switch were all tagged with the correct number or letter as indicated on the wiring diagram.  Other wire ends were also tagged.  He included a fuse holder (with extra fuses ) wired into the hot lead from the battery.  He also sent extra bullet connectors and sockets.  I am well pleased with this harness and would highly recommend him.

Hi John,

it's good to know, if I get stuck and need one I know where to go 🙂
