D1-wiring.JPGHi Guys

I've never been good with electrickery, especially automotive.  My Bantam needs a bit of a er, well more of um, that is to say, a slight total re-wire. Now there's an absolute ton of information about D1 electrics on here, and I bet I've found nearly all of it.  My only problem is, HELP - what does it all mean?  Leaving aside the specifics and vagaries of the Bantam Wico Pacey system, my main problem is that the basic principles of electrics never really sunk in.  Now at this point you're probably thinking that I've got no right to be pulling the thing apart if I don't know what I'm doing, but unfortunately, that's the way I learn stuff.  My kids watch how to do stuff on Youtube, I have to get my hands dirty if you get my meaning.

So.....

My engine is a '50 D1 according to Mr. Walsh.  There is no battery, so I believe that is what BSA classify as "Direct Lighting".

Removing the stator plate cover reveals a bit of a mess (see attachment).  Anyhow, in pursuit of understanding the principles, am I right in thinking that if I unscrew the stator plate, and turn it over, it will reveal two small coils bottom left and right, and the larger HT coil (top middle).  The flywheel generator rotor passes these, generating a magnetic (electric) field.

If my previous understanding is correct, is it as simple as the end of each coil connecting to terminals 3 & 4 shown on the photo?  The two wires marked with a star had been tied together, much in the way that the HT lead is tied onto the HT coil, but weren't joined to terminal 1 or 4.

According to the wiring diagram obtained from this site, only terminal 1 has an external connection - a dark red wire going to the headlamp switch. Is that it?  No other terminals used?  In which case what is the coil that isn't connected to that side of the circuit doing?

When I check with a multi meter, I have continuity between terminals 3 and 4.  Is this right or is the thing shot?

Sorry for being so dense, and asking so many questions, but I need to get this sorted in my head before I start on such things as "why doesn't my headlight switch have 10 terminals"?  And "how do you get the wretched thing out of the headlamp"?

Thanks

Hi Sunny

Many thanks for the reply.  Yep, you're absolutely correct, it's stamped on the casing - Spec. No. 1130.  spec.-no..JPG7

If you could let me have a copy of the correct wiring diagram, that would be great.  I've found a few on here, but none of them seem to exactly match what I have.

I've had a look at the coils, and there are three.  I'll take off the plate and clean it all up.  Hopefully the coils are all still intact.  Despite the slightly dodgy connection at the HT lead, the engine does spark, fire and run.  The electrics not so much.

Having looked at my switch, a)I thinks it's the wrong one, and b) it's broken - many of the contacts are missing.

Thanks again Sunny.  Hopefully you won't be too fed up with me by the time I've finished.

Received safely Sunny.  It's bang on to my machine.  Thanks again, I really do appreciate the effort you went to to get it to me.
