Hi, I have a 1960 D1 plunger under restoration and am trying to establish the actual paint colour for the parts painted red (mudguards, mudguard stays, tank), all the rest is black. I know BSA colour codes are a fairly emotive subject but, as far as I can make out there appears to be two possibilities. BS381C 540 Crimson or Bayard Crimson (a darker crimson), possibly RAL3007. I've had a go with the BS Crimson and it doesn't look as "dark" as the red on the petrol tank - which I haven't started yet. Looking at the BSA COLOUR CODES.htm online Bayard Crimson appears as number 099 on the list together with Ivory panels and Gold lining, (which I have on the tank) and was introduced 13/9/1957. Does anybody know if this latter colour superseded the BS 540 crimson on D1's from Sep 1957 onwards and is therefore applicable to my 1960 bike ?

Barry, a very quick search of the site will uncover endless discussion and speculation on the colours of all bantams. I don't know what website claims to be BSA Paint Codes but the only thing that is universally agreed upon is that there are NO BSA paint codes and it is up to individual owners to use whatever colour strikes them as being closest to their idea of what the colour may have been 60 years ago, depending on what pot of paint had been opened at the factory that day. It's an unanswerable question. Yet it is still probably the most common question on the Forum. Have a look in FAQs for starters.

Good luck

I went to rsbikepaint.com, put in make: BSA, model: D1 (Bantam), year: 1960, came back with Mist Green, Black, and Fuschia Red

Yes they will sell you the paint, I can confirm the mist green seems like a good match for my colour

Yes, you're right there isn't a list of BSA paint codes. I didn't explain properly. If you go to BSACOLOURCODES.htm it isn't a true list of colour codes, it's a list of suffixes which BSA apparantly added to their internal part numbers to further describe whether an item was plated or painted. The colour Bayard Crimson does appear on that list at number 099 adding suffix/105 for Bayard Crimson, /104 for Ivory Panels and Gold Lining in Sep 1957. Its as though those colours were a specific combination to be used together.

The colour I have used so far is BS 381C 540 Crimson. It is way off the original bike colour as I've tried to show in the photo below. I use Paragon Paints and checked with them yesterday and, although not listed in their colour chart, the know about Bayard Crimson having once mixed some up for a coach company in the Midlands !

Looks more like Post Office red to me than any of the “normal” D1 colours.

Hi, Woodchuck here.

I own a bike in a very similar colour to what you're looking for. It is called "Volkswagen Gambia Red", and while it may not be an exact match it's the closest I could find to Bayard Crimson. Hopefully this helps!

Thank you, woodchuck. Perfect answer to the impossible question. Simple as that. In the same way that my "Amaranath Red" 1960 Triumph is "Ford Burgundy." And my 1952 GPO D1 was Halford's "Toolbox Red"............

Hi, Thanks for the replies. Not sure if we are going a bit off piste here. The mudguard I have painted is a crimson to BS381C 540, this is totally wrong and it should be a maroon colour. Don't know why I ended up with a crimson colour, must go to Specsavers ! So I know it's definitely not a PO red.

Have today received a colour chart from Paragon Paints and, comparing with paint scrapings from both the top and bottom of the tank, RAL3004 is a lot nearer the mark, being a maroon and not a crimson. Heaven only knows what Bayard Crimson looks like.

No longer know what "en piste" is with this one. Paint topics go round in interminable circles. Gambia Red looks like the fellow to me. Forget about paragon paints/rs/Ralph and all of that. Pick the colour that you feel looks right. That's why this is such an "emotive" subject. It's not the colours, it's the impossible question coming up again and again with the same old answers. The thread "Colin's D1" also has a burgundy colour and a lovely paint job if that's what you're looking for.....

Just to put this thread to bed, VW Gambia Red looks pretty near the mark which, in todays terms, seems to be about RAL3004. As long as its a burgundy/maroon shade I don't think it makes any difference.

Bayard Crimson I now realise is totally wrong. After a lot of Googling it turned up as a Rolls Royce colour ! From the image on the computer screen it's a very dark red sometimes described as a black red. Its nothing like VW Gambia Red, nor is it anything like crimson. RAL3007 is aboiut it.

When I was looking for BSA colours I read somewhere that BSA mixed their paint every week or as needed so there was variation of the same colour depending who chucked what into the mix for the colours, I recently ordered some nato green, ran out of it and ordered more from the same supplier... it was a different shade, so it still happens now.

Yes. Back in the 1980s I bought a few NOS bits for my D1, all of which came well wrapped and un-faded, and all of which were different shades of green.

The suggestion of Gambia Red is an excellent one and, I for one will be using it on a "maroon" D3 I'm going to be doing over winter. If possible, I'd like to gather together the various options used by Members as substitutes for the different Bantam colour schemes  - for instance, at Sprung Chicken's suggestion, I use ** Please log in to view ** for Mist Green and very nice it turns out too 🙂

If we could collectively pool our knowledge, we might be able to create a "best-guess" list to help others with their tortuous decisions. Might save a lot of the hogwash about RAL-this and Paragon-that, and  I can stick it in FAQs and it'll serve as a very handy reference.......

Good Idea Stu, 'BSA Mist Green' is certainly a long running, and painful, conundrum and it really needs putting to bed.  I will dig out my paint store and look at what we have that might be useful.

Very glad I could help with your D3 colouring, Stoo63! That is a fantastic idea, I like the sound of this colour database.

I look forward to seeing what's knocking around in your paint collection, Sponge. I'll check mine out too!
