G'day all,

We're having carb trouble with our D3..

It has 523/1 stamped on the side but some have said that it's a 361 and not  a 523 ...

Will a 361 bowl cap fit onto a 523/1 bowl ?

We bought a 523/1 float needle (part # 22/014) ,but it only has about 2mm travel and is restricting the fuel supply... it takes about 25 seconds for the bowl to fill when we tickle it.... we're wondering if we have a 523/1 carb and a 361 cap ... is this possible ?

According to the data here:

523 is correct, but with various suffixes depending ...

Could be the hole in the bottom of the float chamber is clogged up, you can try cleaning it out with a drill bit of the correct size, but very carefully!

Yes, the hole the float spindle sits in, in the bottom of the chamber, causes problems. It can stop the float going down, and it can also hold the float away from its seat. Well worth checking.

Thanks Glenn and Number six,

We've cleaned out that hole as I thought that could be an issue..

I've sent photos to a bloke here in Oz who deals in a lot in Amal parts and he's of the opinion that the top is the correct one ... but it has been modified (bodgied 🙁 ) .. I'm going to try and get another 523/1 top that hasn't been tampered with and see how we go.

Thanks for your input gents ... regards from OZ ... Charlie ..

Can you post some pics of the carb, Charlie (front and profile, etc)? It might help better identification.

Thanks Coco,I've not ben able to get a photo up here  🙁  ..

I've since been told that it's definitely a 523/1 carb as the 361 is much smaller and the caps are not interchangeable... so at least that's been cleared up.

I'm going to have a closer look at that hole in the bottom of the bowl now ...something is restricting the travel of the float needle and it's the correct needle.

I'm after a new top and tickler assembly and have written to Burlen in the UK..
