Strangely enough a company selling Villers spares claims to sell the coils. Try using the link to the company below.

Hope that helps.

So I contacted villers and they can supply the lighting coils - they suggest I need 3 light coil (1 x 3 group L coils) - does this sound correct?  From what i can see the 2 x coils look the same and the top one looks different.  Is there any identifier for these coils?  This is for a 1704 spec type 55 generator.

Thanks again,

Glenn

Hi Glenn.
That top coil could well be different from the other two as the top coil is used to charge the battery. It should be a separate coil. It's ends will connect to pins 1 and 4 of the generator, either way round.
The other 2 coils are connected in parallel and connect to pins 2 and 3 of the generator. Pin 2 is frame earth.
There is no identification on the coils themselves but from the picture on the villiers site it looks as if the two lighting coils are pre wired in parallel.

Hi Sunny, I hope these photos attach successfully.  From what I've seen this seems to be the wrong setup for a 2 switch bantam?  Someone has just cinnected the yellow wire at a time to bypass all the electrics and just used the points directly.  D7-Generator-1.jpgD7-Generator-2.jpg

Hi Glenn.
That stator is from a single switched D7. Definately no use on a twin switched as it is.
The big coil at the top is the magneto ignition coil. Not needed on a twin switched D7 as the ignition coil is mounted under the seat.
The other 3 coils will be wired incorrectly for a twin switched D7.
Using the 3 coil set that Villiers Spares can supply that stator could be modified to work on a twin switched D7 by removing the magneto coil and fit the 3 coil set supplied by Villiers Spares.
Hope that makes sense.

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply.  Are these the ones I need on the right? They all loom the same, should there be a difference between the charging and lighting coils?

I think that the ones on the right are correct. I thought that all 3 coils used for the twin switched D7 were the same.

Perhaps they are Mike, unfortunately the only referce I could find on the internet is the one below.  I thought one coil might have a higher output than the others and 2 coloured wires (orange and white):

Actually, is the top coil the only one with 2 wires?

I may have learned something there. That's a good picture.
Yes I think you are right, that coil is different.
That is the coil for battery charging and is separate from the other two. One end of this coil goes to pin 1 with the white wire, the other end goes to pin 4 with the orange wire.
All of the coils have two wires of course, but the two that are the same are wired in parallel. One end of the coils goes to earth via pin2, the other end goes to pin 3 where the red wire is connected. These 2 coils supply the AC for lighting when the lighting switch is in the "H" position.

Thanks Mike and Sunny.  I'll contact Villers tomorrow again to see if they can supply what I need to have the correct setup for the twin switch version.  Are the coils just pressed on?  Any recommendations on how to remove these?

Many thanks for all your help!

Glenn

So I've got the new coils from Villers and the 2 x lighting coils are different from the charging coil, no problem.  Looking at the avilable information, terminal 2 on the generator housing is earthed, as well as being connected to oneend o the lighting coils.  I can't find any photographs for reference, but do I just run a wire from this terminal onto a screw within the generator casing to earth this?  I can't see another way of doing this but am welcome for any suggestions. All the best, Glenn

Hi Sunny, my question is that post or terminal 2 is shown on the wiring diagram as going to earth, however post 2 is insulated from the rest of the housing, the same as the rest of the posts, so to earth this do I just run a wire from this terminal to somewhere on the engine? Also, does it matter way round the wire from the inside and outside of the lighting coils go?  Can these be reversed?

The stator has an earth screw at the rear that connects to Post no2 on front of the stator so it is Earth
