Hello all.

I've just finished putting a post up under the "Newbies" section and already I'm asking questions.

I've just aquired a 1957 D1 ( basket case) and I'm trying to find the engine number. My Haynes manual says it's on the left hand crankcase and I would imagine by that it means somewhere on the top behind the barrel, but there is nothing there. Were engine numbers placed somewhere different on the early D1's or have I got a mystery engine on my hands?

Well, I've looked closely at the front engine mount area and can find no evidence of an engine number. I have found a pair of matching 4 digit numbers (CK 59) stamped on the bottom of the crankcase halves but, I assume, these are there simply to ensure matching halves.

Hello,

The engine number on a 1957 D1 should be on the LH crankcase just to the left of the carburettor spigot (or above the gearbox sprocket shaft hole) and should be in the range DD4801 to DD8577 direct lighting and DDB 3301 to DDB7849 battery lighting.

Regards,

Thanks Jubilee. Well, according to the V5 document my engine No. should be DDB-4963 so that falls inside the range you quoted. It will probably remain a mystery why the numbers are not there. I can only imagine that somewhere in it's past it has had new crankcase halves.
