Can someone tell me please, are all the stator plates and points cams the same on all the 3 speed engines D1 through to D10, for some reason I am unable to retard the ign enough, the shaft does'nt appear to have moved at all , stiill at 17.5 degrees.

I have tried running it without the cam key, but the timing managed to slip.

No, they are not the same, firstly the D10 was the first of the models to do away with the stator plate and had an alternator fitted to the nearside and the points and condenser fitted to the offside, the ignition was battery powered.

D1 to D7 were superficially similar but had different stator plates depending on the equipment fitted. There were also alternative cams available.

The cranks were different between the D1/D3 models and the D5/D7 models. If you have a crank with the shaft set at 17.5 degrees then it's a D5/D7 crank, the D1/D3 shafts should be 27.5 degrees.

Hi Aquarius, Thanks for your reply . Why I mentioned the D10 was because I thought that the Supreme and the Silver were 3 speed with stator and points on the left side, and again perhaps using slightly different points and stator.

Sorry ! I should have mentioed that mine is a D7 and I am unable to move the stator plate anti clockwise to retard the ign enough to arrive at the correct timing.

I know about the 10 degee difference between the D1/D3  and D5/D7.

As far as the equipment is concerned I thought it was all wipac on the 3 speed machines ?

So the question now is , are different cams still available and where from ?

Have you tried running the engine with only a six thou points gap?

Your engine could well be yet another that has slightly nipped up at some stage and rotor has carried on turning and taken timing shaft with it, moving shaft and keyway in relation to piston position etc?

Four now on the road and at least several in bits.

Hi Mags,  No I have'nt tried that yet  , but I will.  I have yet to check the 17.5 degrees more accurately.

When I had the big end renewed I did'nt know about the possibility that the shaft could move, it was my first bantam build !

Crank must be one or the other, I doubt you'd get ten degrees movement on just the stator plate...

.

only two types of points cam you are likely to come across
early for Mag/ign and later for batt/coil ignition
only difference is later type have a shorter dwell angle, no difference in ignition timing as this is solely dependent on the crankshaft
Points-cams.jpg

all the stator plates are the same only difference is what coils are fitted
Wipac did make some points cams with a 3 degree timing difference but very unlikely you will find one.
Is your D7 Mag or battery ignition?

Hi Mags, Did what you suggested , the points are now set at .007 " and stator plate fully retarded , the timing is now about as close as I'm able to get it and the bike runs a lot better now, Thanks !

Mike, Thanks for the pics of the cams, thats just the info I was looking for. mine is one of the new cams . The ign has been changed to battery .
