Having just destroyed a piston and now need a rebore I am wondering if changin the piston ring circlips from the thin wire clips to steel internal 15 mm circlips. The type you need to remove and fit with circlip pliers. These look stronger more robust and as though they would fit better in the groove in the piston.

Any thoughts?

Not a good idea...the groove is machined to suit the type of clip.

Tell us some more about the piston...was it new used if new were did you buy it....did you fit it before it damaged your bore.

If I buy a piston with wire clips...some have long tails on to grip with pliers...I cut these off as it encourages the pin to jump out at high speed.

The gap in the ring should be directly up or down...if side on it can bounce out due centrifugal force...less of an effect if the gap is up/down.

Where about are you...I know a brilliant 2 stroke only bike engine machiner in Cheshire...rebore £30.
