Petrol grade doesn't matter, you could run a bantam on 105 octane, the low octanes are just more prone to pinking so ignition timing has to be earlier than you can achieve with modern fuels.

The big problem of modern fuel is the ethanol content, and supermarket fuels are the worst for it (which is why they're cheaper), especially Tesco and Morrisons who have both received reprimands for not keeping within allowed limits.

Yep, i think we are agreed. Petrol grade does matter.

As lads we had various field bikes we`d share and some experimented with fuels...but not on my bikes! Our local tame Speedway rider liked to add a bit of methanol, can`t remember what the result was on his road-based field bike, but I distinctly remember one of the lad`s Bantam front pipe glowing red hot due to his paraffin fueled experiment. Mix ratio unknown. He warmed her up on correct petrol-oil mix first. Back when Bantams were held in disgust by many. Imagine dropping that and ending up underneath it....or perhaps not.

Les, talking of gas , I bought a v-twin B&S-powered ride-on mower project, complete with all the propane fittings, carrier, bottle. I have a spare Bantam frame, what`s the smallest propane bottle available....can you see where I`m going with this 😉

Grab a couple of those propane camping stoves, remove the inners, and you have quick-release, self-sealing bottles and copper pipes to link it... Although I feel that you may not pass the sva rofl

Hi, Neil have you looked on other sites for Pool Petrol like Vintage Tractors, Lorrys, Military. I know for Tractors they have recipes for TVO9 (tractor vaporising oil) so they may do for others.

Bantamad did your dad know Farmer it may have been TVO used, old tractors had two tanks small petrol and large tvo, started on petrol and ran for a few minutes and turned over tvo so he probably had to add petrol to get it fire up. TVO is similar to paraffin my dad used to put in]t in the hurricane lamps in the cow shed, ho and also used to paint the chickens legs with it if they got Scaly Leg Mites laugh

Yes we had a Fergi and older David Brown both TVO, had a 500 gallon tank in the yard. Just noticed in my post it says TVO9 don't know where the 9 can from should be TVO.
