Well its only the spring steel clip that I need not the whole spring link. Hopefully there will be a modern equivalent that will fit.

Hey Les, were we separated at birth, we`ll need to get DNA tests, hehe...first there`s the agricultural mechanics, now MOT testing!

Very good point, a random split link retaining clip from a particular batch, may not be a good fit for another random spare link, namely Alan`s. I missed that one!

Cheers

The problem seems to be no one (thus far) has split links for my renolds chain. Seems they no longer make it. The dealers I have spoken to/visited locally  tell me they can get a modern renolds split link that will fit but it wont be quite the same, I think they said it was 1.5mm wider. I thought a new retaining clip would be better than a new split link 1.5mm wider or re using the damaged split link I was trying to replace in the 1st place. Lesser of two evils if you like.

The retaining clips look identical to the one I'm replacing but havent tried fitting them yet.

Hopefully it`ll prize on with a satisfying click and sit tight, job done. Blind end facing direction of travel obviously. Easier to fit while on the rear sprocket so the adjacent side plate next to one you pop on the joining link, isn`t inline with it and getting in the way. Pair of snub-nosed pliers, one jaw on the back pin of the joining link and the other jaw pulling the end of the clip in place...click it goes, make sure it`s sat in the grooves properly.

There are various designs of retaining clip, some more robust and of better design and inspiring confidence than others.
