Good video that also shows how you should flare the ends of the inner cable & using a solder pot.

well i saw the  item and the video, on making cables that was on here the other day and nearly fell for buying the tool from venhill to make a nice job of burring over the end on the cables before soldering, i thought hang on i might be able to make this, so here is the result of an 1 hrs work and more bits of scrap that was laying around the workshop.

i think it turned out as good as the £100 tool and it cost me 1 broken drill bit lol

what do you reckon !

hi john,

i cut the angle iron down to size ,

cleaned it up with a flapper disc in angle grinder so that it all fitted together nice and flush,

then put the angle back to back and mig welded together with tack welds to hold all together, then found the right size drill bits for the cable actual size, then dropped back a size on drill bit, so now the cable gets clamped in place nice and tight but dosent crush it.

then drilled down the centre of both bits of angle , this is where i broke the drill bit lol.

then i found 2 different size drill bits to drill in the same hole as the wire goes in and gets clamped ,

drill with the smaller drill first then use the bigger drill bit so that the punch will fit inside.

drill out the end of the piece of bar with a small drill bit but not too deep, took a couple of attempts to get this right.

hope this helps you out buddy, good luck.

john.

Thanks for the tip there, I've been meaning to make something like this for years and never got around to it, no excuse now!

Four now on the road and at least several in bits.

I made one last year after watching the same video, same way as you john angle iron(i put 3 different sizes on mine)but i just used a drift to flare over the cable and it worked well enough but seeing the striker you made i'm going to make one of them as well as it makes for a nice neat job, thanks for sharing........

Im sure it will be fine
I was just amazed that they could manufacture and post half way around the world for that price
the “we’re doomed” ( Dad’s Army saying) was a lament for the UK manufacturing industry

but i get your point, it's hard to understand how they can do it, all the ones i looked at here in this  country were 3 and more times the price.
