hi all

so i purchased a 1968 bsa bantam recently, no log book but it has the reg plate on which dates to november 68 and i assumed it to be a D13. Problem i have is ive revealed the frame number which starts D10 and ive searched the usual engine area for the engine number which i cant locate. Im now out of ideas... can anyone help?

Try a little forward of your photo, between the edge of the crankcase and the barrel.

I think the frame number is clear enough to show it’s a D10 not a D13. Very early engines had the number stamped close to the front engine mount so look there and check if someone hasn’t replaced the engine with an early 125. Make sure you ** Please log in to view ** regarding the registration process BEFORE you apply to DVLA for a registration.

My 1966(D-plate) D10 has the engine number stamped right where those,er, dents are.

Either the crankcases were not stamped(eg as in replacement factory engine, under warrenty) or for some reason, ahem, the engine number was removed by an "owner",and the remaining deeper indentations from factory`s crude hand-stamping were modified with a chisel.Just two possibilities.

If I am reading that right, its D10 8076 which is from June 67 and was sent to a dealer in Wigan. It was a D10 silver and would have left the factory with an engine of the same number

What you’re saying actually makes sense, I’m based in Liverpool and apparently the bike was local and Wigan is not far away (maybe a one owner bike). So is their a chance that it  could have sat in a dealership until Nov68? as that is when it was apparently 1st registered.

and thanks to everyone for your help it’s much appreciated.

The bikes weren't selling well in the late 60's, so it is possible it sat in the showroom for a while. How do you know it was registered in November 68 if you don't have the log book?

So i went to gov.uk and search if a vehicle has a current tax or mot which shows these details

So send a V62 to DVLA with a cheque for £25 and they should send you the log book. If you get the V5 that way it will save you a lot of hassle.
