Hi,

Has anyone used this kit from these folks?

** Please log in to view **

I find it interesting because they say "...Replaces the original Lucas/Wipac alternator and rotor. Points, distributor and battery are not required...".

I presume you are thinking of changing the whole system to electronic ignition. Sunny prefers the original systems. To learn more on the pros and cons of electronic ign, plus the other options available, have a browse through existing topics covering the subject.

As far as I can see it is just an ignition system. There is no mention of power for ancillary systems (lighting & horn).

I have recently fitted a STK-177 unit. No problem with fitting and the lighting/battery charging works well. Engine starts second kick every time. You will need to convert to a 12v neg earth system but I expect you already know this.

On my unit the 16deg advance red centre pop mark was set at 16deg retard. Electrix World confirmed this was a fault and I fixed it using a strobe timing light.Hope yours has been sorted

Interesting that one unit type will cover D1 to D7,so no problem using a D7 crank in a D1 motor or whatever.

Their rotor weighs approx a lb more than std, that surprised me.Wonder if this is noticeable in the motor`s performance/tractability/engine braking etc?

Hi Spencer,

My Elextrex World experiences were not good. I received poor customer service & after 6 months messing about eventually reverted back to the old Wipac, coil & points system - which is working fine now.

May just have been a one off - who knows?

Regards, Broadsman.

Hi Blue,

In 2015 I purchased an Elextrec World STK-175 Bantam Trial system for my D10. It was easy to fit & fired up first time.

I used the bike locally & found that it had difficulty re-starting once warm. It let me down four times. I had to push it home three times & had it recovered once. I checked everything, rotor gap, plug, plug cap, timing - but the problem persisted.

I found Electrex extremely difficult to contact. Long story short - over a 6 months period I spent a lot of time emailing, calling & chasing them with no help. When I threatened to return the unit they eventually responded & gave me some spare parts. I swapped the CDI, Stator & the problem still persisted.

Once warm, if you try to restart the bike again, the spark seems to disappear. I did find that if someone helped me push start the bike it would start. So I suspect that, once warm, you can't kick the bike over fast enough to generate a spark. It was really frustrating.

In 2016 I ended up reverting back to the  good old 6 volt Wipac, points, battery system again - & it's run perfectly since.

So my Electrex experiences have not been good.

Regards, Broadsman

Wotcha.

I fitted an Electrex World system to a BSA OHC special - it ran fine.  The bike was then laid up whilst sorting out some registration problems, when I came to start it there was no spark.   Did the tests mentioned on the Electrex World website and it all checked OK.  The only component left was the actual CDI box itself.    Trouble is - the system was now about 14 months old and out of warranty.

Posted it all back to Elextrex World explaining what had been checked - they sent a new CDI box back by return of post, free of charge.

So my experience of Electrex World is a positive one.

p.s. - fitted it all back this afternoon and all is now well again.

^..^
