Hi all, I have started to strip the D14/4 engine I bought at the weekend. It is all in good order. I split the cases and checked it all out. Same good order but it would not select gears correctly. I have taken the gears apart and all looks ok. HOWEVER could somebody before my work shop manual arrives please inform me how to re assemble the gear selectors. There must be a sequence to start with and the ball bearing etc.

Thanks in advance Ken.

There are a couple of articles which if you google you will find.

It is fiddly to get everything assembled correctly; there is a correct order in which to fit the gears, selector forks, and then get the selector cam in the correct position, force it against the selector ball and get the clamp bolted up.

There is a pdf workshop manual for the D14/4 somewhere which is a lot better than the Haynes manual. I may have it still on file if you cannot find one.

You do need to ( or should) replace the selector spring, the spring behind the ball bearing, the bolt lockwashers for the 2 internal bolts.

Check the dogs for wear and also the bushes in the output gear and replace anything with excessive wear. I had a problem with mine after a rebuild with 4th gear jumping out! The engine was rebored and all bearings and seals replace so the power increased and this will find any gearbox weakness!

I have a very good guide that was sent to me by another forum member but the document is large. If you want to PM me with your email address I would be happy to send it to you.

Glad you received the guide OK. If I had to give just one tip, it would be pay very close attention to lining up that cam plate and quadrant. Yes, I had to rebuild my gearbox twice because I didn’t pay close attention.
