I have an original air filter in my box of bits and is it of any use, as in can I still use it?

I have a new k&n air filter, but I have had to squash it and it doesn't really fit nor filter the air, so I was hoping that I could clean the old one through with petrol and use this  or would it be past it and not that good, if at all

Hi Chris.
I am suprised that the K&N filter does not fit, mine fits perfectly. Is it the one in the link below?

I did try to clean an old one with petrol, but mine was still clogged up afterwards. I suppose it would be worth a try.
