Dear Members

Thank you for allowing me to use this Forum to hopefully answer some questions I have, to complete the restoration of my D1 GPO Bantam featured.

The frame number is BD2582032. The original engine number was DDB19232, but I purchased this bike with the engine number being DDB12919.

I have had the bike in pieces for a number of years and have now found some time to put it back together. I am looking for an new exhaust and silencer to match the one in the pictures as I believe this was orginal to the bike. Can anyone guide me to which exhaust and silencer this bike had and where can I buy a good replacement.

Many thanks

Jon (3320)

Hi Jim

Many thanks for your reply tp my question about buying the right exhaust and silencer for my D1 GPO Bantam. As our GPO Bantams are very late D1 models, I believe there were differences in parts used to complete ours from what was used on the earlier bantams. My D1 was fitted with a  later "Smiths SSM 2001/ 00" speedometer instead of the moonshape 29-9293 speedometer.

It looks like a later D3 silencer has been fitted to my D1 and wondered if this was what was fitted originally?

If anyone can help me with this information to get my bantam the right silencer I will be most grateful.

Many thanks

Jon

As Smiths had stopped manufacturing 'D' shaped chronometric speedometers, BSA specially manufactured the top yoke to accept the round magnetic speedometers for the last few batches of D1 PO bikes.

Many thanks again for all the interest  and advice given to me so far, in buying the right exhaust and silencer to fit on my GPO Bantam.

Piquet is right with the information about the top yoke being changed to fit the SSM 2001/00 Speedometer. See pictures below.

I am still not certain if my bantam was fitted with the orginal spec exhaust and silencer or the later D3 version. I spent a lot of time looking at pictures of GPO Bantams which included GLE 977C, 330 BXE and YLH334 haviing the later D3 version.

I feel that when General Post Office brought there bikes in for maintence that parts could have been change around. Could you add some pictures of your GPO bike to this page Jim?

Many thanks

Jon

Dear Members

I am restoring a 1965 GPO D1 and asked if anyone could tell me what was the right silencer and exhaust it was originally fitted with (08-11-2017). A friend of mind has dug out a big article about Post Office Bantams by Brian Reed written for the August 2001 “Post Horn” which I have attached below.

I also have attached some photographs of the fabulous wiring loom I have purchased from Mr Bill Mead as recommended in “The Good Blokes Guide”. Bill gave me great guidance to the right loom for my bike.

Hi Jonathan,

Your GPO D1 is on a C-reg plate is it?Did BSA carry on producing D1s for the PO for two years after they stopped making them available to hoi polloi?

Blue

Edit:- I`ve just answered my own question after nipping to google for a look-see....

fliickr wont allow access from the link I posted above here,to the GPO Bantam pics, except the single one above with the 2x 1964 D1s.There are a stack of them if you access the site through google.

Found four C-reg D1 GPO Bantams on that very good picture link.I`ve learned something today.Looking at the pics, seems they did have the longer torpedo silencers....& ∴ of course shorter front pipe.

I also saw 3x D1s suffixed with FYM...I have a Bantam frame(not GPO I don`t think) registered with 3nos,then FYM,I wonder what area that`s from?

Not for all Counties.

From January 1963 the 'A' Suffix was optional, Middlesex used 'A' as they were getting short of numbers, most other Counties started using 'B' Suffix from January the following year. From January 1965, 'C' 'D' etc. became compulsory for all Counties. 'E' was only used for the 6 months between 1st January 1967 to 31st July 1967. 'F' was introduced from 1st August 1967 and continued till 31st July 1968 and this became the pattern until August 1983 when the alphabet was started again but this time as a Prefix.

Thanks Piquet,so Greater London(Bryan`s tip for ---FYM),still had a glut of old 3-number-3-letter registration plates to shift, even by early December of 1963 when my D1 was registered. The other years are ok with me,I got used to them when I was an MOT tester, but 1963 always puzzles me 🙂

Jonathan, now your recent post has been tagged onto your restoration page,I now understand that your D1 was held back for a couple of years after manufacture,as far as issuing a reg plate is concerned.I see why you need a new silencer and it has the correct one fitted, the long torpedo....I`d say.

I`m picturing Sheep farmer Cattani riding the ruts with that unsprung saddle....or did he stand up Trials-fashion?

Rear no plate bracket looks a bit odd...and did the brake light switch originally bolt to the pillion rest bracket mounting point.

Did the GPO boys give little old ladies a lift in to the PO to pick up their pensions?I know the Postman Pat vans often did....perhaps still do in rural behind-the-back-of-beyonds?!

The 'A' prefix being optional, it's possible they had already issued some numbers in bulk to organisations and those were still valid in 1963, it follows that Middlesex/Central London (where Post Office Bantams were Registered at the time) were issuing both forms of registration during 1953.

I worked at a BSA dealer a bit later on in the '60's/'70's and we used to get a bulk issue of 'early' numbers (3 letters-2 digits-suffix) to make it easier to arrange the number on the motorcycle plate, so I suspect that bulk issue was an established common practice.

Does your D1 --- FYM have numbers in the range 715 - 980?

Thanks Piquet,very informative.

Yes my numbers are almost bang in the middle of that run.Don`t tell me,the frame used to be in GPO red and not the green it is currently in?! 🙂

Cheers

Yes, those numbers were issued to the Post Office, the Frame Number would confirm. Suggest you contact the Club Dating Officer for more details.
