Hi, I have a 1950 D1. Could anyone tell me please 1) if D1's had to have a front plate 2) if so was it mounted centrally on the front mudguard or 3) were there two plates mounted either side of the (deeply valanced) front mudguard? and where can I get 1950 dtyle plates made?

Hi Alan,

The deep valanced front mudguard on my 1950 D1, had the registration number painted on either side of the mudguard... Nick

D1 Renovation; had it for 50 years and thought I ought to start :)

However, as I thought it might take a while, bought a B40 to ride.

Thanks. Not very conclusive! but I have seen a BSA brochure picture and the numbers are on the sides. Given 1950 rigids had deep valances it makes sense. Not sure but maybe 1950 plungers had the more modern front mudguards with insufficient room for the numbers, so they could have had the single mounting above the guard. 

Does anyone know if the numbers were always painted or if they were plates? Seems like a lot of trouble and expense to go to a signwriter!

Nowadays yes but then it would have been much easier to get it painted than get a plate made

after 53? for blade gaurds and even then they were common painted

If you are worried about the price, why not do the following. Get the number plate paint it white, then place stick on numbers and letters you require. Then paint it black, let it dry then remove letters and numbers,Use T-Cut to clean any imperfections. Mine looks alright.

I want to keep as original as possible so it now seems a single plate would not be appropriate. Now I know it should have reg on the valances I will find a suitable photo and ask a signwriter for a quote. Thanks for all assistance.

Thanks for this excellent photo. I assume there was some legislation regarding style and size of font so finding it is my next job.

I had a 1950 D1 in 1953, it had black area on both sides of the valanced mudguard to receive the sign written numbers.

I have just restored an identical machine and a local signwriter with CAD kit set out the curved spacing and I fixed the whole sets perfectly aligned.

It was not very expensive. See photo
