Hi All.
Having just returned from the Christmas revelries and sobered up sufficiently, I think that we are all singing from the same hymn sheet or carol sheet, so to speak.
One end of the parallel coils at the bottom of the stator goes to earth(Pin2). Obviously the screw that mike has highlighted above is connected to the frame ie. earth. Pin 2 of the stator should also be connected frame earth. Sunny is suggesting that it is a good idea to connect pin 2 to the battery earth point.
The other end of the lighting coils should go to pin 3 where the dark red wire from the loom will connect.

The top coil has both it's ends free, these should connect to pins 1 and 4. Either way round as it's AC and goes to the rectifier where it's converted to DC to charge the battery.
Are we all agreed?

Thanks Mikes and Sunny - I agree!  I checked again and the screw at the back wasn't fully tightened and therefore was not making contact with the back of terminal 2 creating the earth to the frame, this issue is now sorted - I believe the majority of the electrics are now sorted and I'm getting a good spark at the plug.

I went to start the bike for the first time yesterday but couldn't get it to fire up.  checked the compression and it's down to around 50 psi. Adding some 2T oil down the bore increased compression to approximately 90 psi so I'll pull the barell off for a rebore and a new piston and try again.

Try turning over a bit more and see if the figure rises you may just have a stuck ring.

As  John says - give it a good few kick AT FULL THROTTLE to get a more representative reading.

I've tried a lot of kicking at this now and still not much improvement to the compression reading.  I've removed the carb and can feel the rings through the inlet and they definitely son't feel stuck.  It's not a lot of effort to remove the barrell so I'll get to it at the start of the week and have a better look.

Hi Glenn.
I don't think that you will feel the piston rings through the inlet port. The exhaust port is needed to do that.
Even if the compression is down, I would think that it should fire up to some degree. A timing check is called for and a check to see that fuel is getting through.
Does the spark plug get wet with fuel?
Good luck.
