Engine Bearings Removal

Hi All

 

I rebuilding the engine on my B175

 

I want to remove the 2 bearings on the crankshaft drive side.

 

In the BSA manual it states to warm up the crankcase to aid removal.

 

With both bearings close together can a member help me with the correct way to remove these 2 bearings.

You simply get the cases good and hot, I use my Rothenburger butane torch, cases should be too hot to pick up, especially around bearings area, a longish thin round punch is used on the bearings inner race, the only part you can reach with any ease, you will of course damage the old bearings by hitting them this way, but new bearing sets are cheap enough about £25 a time on feebay. Don’t just hit the inner race in one place, hit in at least 4 different places to get old bearing moving out in a controlled level fashion. DD.

I don’t bother to use heat for removal, just for re-fitting. I turned a drift up on the lathe which goes through the centre of the inner bearing to knock out the outer. You could try to find something of a suitable size to do the same. Once the outer bearing is out you can get to the inner one.

I bought a hot air paint stripper gun from Homebase and use it on max. Spit should bounce off the metal when it is hot enough.

Hi,

Did mine with hot air paint stripper and old scewdriver outside one first then inside one working around the bearing a bit at a time. All as advised by forum they came out easy.

Putting in new bearings also heated up casings and greased and heated up grease and area but cooled bearings for a couple of days in freezer and gently knocked in bearings with drift on outer ring went in easy.

Did heating and cooling thing with seals also.
